The county of Merseyside is dominated by the city of Liverpool and is becoming a popular vacation destination. Of course, since the 1960's Liverpool's history has been dominated by the Beatles and the city's two football clubs (Liverpool & Everton). While there is much to satisfy the demands of the music fanatic there is lots more to Merseyside with something to keep almost anybody ethoroughly entertained. The name Merseyside is derived from the river Mersey which played a vital part in the industrialisation of the area during the industrial revolution. At times it seems almost impossible to avoid the area's industrial heritage with the numerous museums, regenerated docklands and exhibitions. Port Sunlight is on the Wirral which is just a short ferry crossing from Liverpool. This small village is well worth a visit and a visit to tthe Lady Lever Art Gallery can finish the visit nicely.

Just outside Liverpool you will find the Knowsley Safari Park which is great fun for a family day out but you must be warned the baboons will jump on your vehicle! The area has been historically important and there are a number of fine buildings worth visiting such as Speke Hall. Speke Hall has parts dating from as early as 1490 and has a spectacular Tudor Great Hall. If you like the old black and white timbered buildings then you really mustn't miss Speke Hall.

Southport is a popular Merseyside seaside resort. Historically Southport was part of the county of Lancashire (and many sandbaggers still put this as their address!) but was integrated into Merseyside following boundary changes. First developed in the early 19th Century Southport quicklly became the main vacation destination of the north of England and it remained so until Blackpool later became more popular.
